Bike to work week year 2

This week was national bike to work week. I drove my car today as I'm taking my manager to lunch. I owe her from about a year ago. I'll be back on my bike tomorrow. Today would have been perfect however as it was sunny and warm and no wind. I saw one guy on his bike. Two nights ago on my evening ride I found some wild asparagus growing along the river. So I had some of that for dinner. I had a strange bear dream that I might disclose later. Some serious REM.

I saw a few people biking to work today. . . .

I wouldn't mind biking to work every now and then (it's 10 miles), but I don't have a bike and I have class in Westwood today.

Most people don't live in a situation that makes riding a bike to work possible. I'm lucky that I do, but it was a choice I made when I bought my house, and I still don't do it as much as I could or should. Our society isn't designed around the bike for the most part.

There are two new companies that have moved into this area and when they all get off work at the same time it is one big line of traffic trying to get into one lane that goes on the freeway. Even the direction into Idaho is a problem and gets backed up. And if there is an accident then the whole thing comes to a standstill. I just go right past them all on my bike.

The downside is that I have been hit by one of them.

I'm sorry to hear that you got hit by one of those loons!

Traffic here gets pretty bad going home, or going up to school some days. Driving 10 miles takes about 30-45 minutes on a good day. On a bad day it takes an hour and a half to get to class.

It's strange how European/Asian cultures are really integrated with the bicycle and other "compact" forms of transportation. We never picked up on that. Kind of like cloth shopping bags. One of the first things I did when I moved here was buy a couple canvas shopping bags. My only problem is that I don't carry them with me as often as I should.

It's sad that China was getting along so well on bikes in the large cities and now it is starting to get clogged with cars and more air pollution.

If you get a chance look at Veronica's photos of parking in Kiev on the side bar of Neeka's Backlog (on my sidebar)

That was what is so cool about Park City. They have these busses that don't cost anything to ride and everyone takes them because they are more convenient than driving a car around. I realize that is a very small place and it is subsidized, but it's an example of how public transportation can work keeping the town nice for people.

Missoula is a great place to get around on a bike. But I see that there are more and more bike car pedestrian conflicts. It's gotten to the point that bikes are a problem on the U of M campus as people ride too fast on the sidewalks and hurt trees by locking to them.
